Devotion

Welcome to the last week! This week is all about how your personal relationship with God impacts the way you do life with everyone else. Today, let's start with the church! Maybe we think of the church as a building or a place, but in the Bible, this word was never used to describe a building or gathering place. It was used to describe the people that made up the church! It actually comes from a Greek word that means, "called-out ones." We are the ones called out of the world to live for God and bring His Kingdom to our world. God also calls the church His Body, and the Bible tells us that His body is made up of people who all have a part to play. Every part is needed, and every person has a gift to give...a way that they can serve God and serve others in the body. God sees every gift as important, and necessary for building His church. God doesn't want us to be spectators at church, but He wants each of us to be active in serving Him and serving others. Think about this.: you are the church! As you read these scriptures, think about what God has given you to give and serve with. Acts describes what the early church was like, and it was amazing! This group of people devoted themselves to their leaders' teaching, they were generous to each other, shared everything and looked after each other's needs and they met every day! The result was that there were many miracles, and people were getting saved every day. This is the impact that God has called us, His church, to have.

Scripture

Romans 12:3-8 (NLT)
Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us. Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other. In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.
Acts 2:42-47 (NLT)
All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.
Matthew 28:19-20 (NLT)
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
