Scripture

Isaiah 9:6 (NLT)
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Matthew 1:1 (NLT)
This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham
Matthew 2:15 (NLT)
and they stayed there until Herod’s death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “I called my Son out of Egypt.
John 1:1-5 (NLT)
In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
John 1:14 (NLT)
So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
Hebrew 4:15 (NLT)
This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.

The Person of Christ Necessary For Salvation

Jesus is arguably the most well known man in all of history. His name is spoken all around the world, and the story of what He did on the cross has been shared for generations and celebrated each year. Lives, communities, even nations have been built on Biblical principles, because of the free gift of Salvation offered to us, through Christ.

But who really is Jesus? The Bible gives Jesus many names and attributes, so that today we can continue to understand who He really is. Our Scripture passages for today reveal that Jesus is:

  • MIGHTY GOD: (Isaiah 9:6)
  • SON OF DAVID: (Matthew 1:1)
  • SON OF GOD: (Matthew 2:15)
  • WORD OF GOD: (John 1:1-5,14)

John 1 specifically teaches that Jesus was the Word, the Word was God, and the Word was with God, and the Word became flesh. This shows us that our saviour, Jesus Christ, is fully human and fully divine. Theologians call this the “hypostatic union.” There is no one else who is like Jesus in this regard, however it is essential to our salvation that we see Jesus in this way.

  1. It Makes Salvation Possible – Only a human could die for humanity’s sins, but only God could make that sacrifice perfect and powerful enough to save the world. Jesus, being both God and man, was the perfect sacrifice. By atoning for our sins, and overcoming the power of death, Jesus brings about the restoration that humanity needed, but could never achieve on our own.
  2. It Makes Jesus Relatable – Since Jesus lived completely as a human being, He understands our struggles, pain, and temptations. Hebrews 4:15 says, “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathise with our weaknesses.” This means we can come to Him for help, knowing He truly understands. He has walked through life, just like you and I, facing and overcoming every trial we face, and invites us into the victory that He won for us on the cross.

Jesus wants to bring us into a close and personal relationship with Him. He desires us to know every part of who He is, and the fullness of His love for us. He walked on this Earth, lived as we do, so that He could show us the way to live in the fullness of God.

This Easter season, as we remember what Jesus did on the cross, let us remember who He was. He was God incarnate, God in the flesh, Who gave up His life so that you and I could have the relationship with God that we were designed for. He, the creator, allowed His own creation to crucify Him, out of His love for us. I encourage you to allow the overwhelming love of God to fill you this Easter as we reflect on the ultimate sacrifice that was paid on our behalf.
